UW-Madison Center for Biology Education

The Center for Biology Education develops and coordinates activities and programs in biology education at the K-12 and undergraduate levels. CBE program directors have backgrounds and training in a variety of biology disciplines as well as in the field of education. Members of UW-Madison's biological sciences research community -– faculty, staff and students – participate actively in developing and implementing Center activities.

CBE enriches the undergraduate learning experience at UW-Madison by providing information about resources and opportunities for students in the biological sciences, offering student research experiences in faculty labs and supporting faculty/staff who are interested in improving undergraduate instruction in the sciences.

Outreach activities promote inquiry-based learning, engage teachers and students directly with scientists and share the excitement of scientific discovery with precollege students and K-12 teachers by:

  • Offering summer programs that bring middle and high school students onto the campus for academic enrichment and hands-on research experiences
  • Networking teachers with University researchers and other teachers around the state
  • Creating teams of School of Education students and Madison area teachers that conduct summer research projects in University labs
  • Providing yearlong programs for teachers to create or adapt innovative teaching materials to their own interests and classroom situations
  • Holding summer workshops for teachers to learn about research topics and the latest discoveries (environmental toxicology, long-term ecology, biotechnology and others)
  • Offering teaching materials designed for Wisconsin middle and high school science curricula and aligned with Wisconsin academic standards
  • Consulting with schools to help them develop science fairs, family science nights and other science enrichment activities
  • Partnering with schools and districts on systemic education reform efforts
See details about how to participate in these and other CBE programs on our Web site (http://www.wisc.edu/cbe/cbe/K12.html).
